Located in Fulton Plaza in San Francisco, between the Asian Art Museum and the Main Library, is the autonomous, farmer-operated nonprofit Heart of the City Farmers Market. The market, which opened its doors in 1981, works to assist local farmers and provide fresh produce to low-income clients who are unable to afford healthy eating in one of the country's most expensive cities. HOCFM, the country's largest farmers market food assistance program, distributes more than $3.5 million annually through its information tent, offers nutrition education and support, oversees the distribution and redemption of the country's largest farmers market EBT program, and makes more than $1 million in grant-funded incentives available annually to assist low-income families in buying fruits and vegetables from nearby farms.
The attractive location above the bustling Civic Center BART and MUNI stations, special 9-hour farmers market days, and a diverse group of farmers who have expanded their businesses over decades to serve the needs of a low-income neighborhood have made HOCFM, with over 20,000 patrons daily, a popular shopping destination.
